4 Unspoken Rules Of Feedback

8/5/2018

Over the past few months, I have given and received more feedback than usual, and I like this new normal. I think it is because of my coaching certification program coupled with increased stakeholders at work. That got me thinking about the unspoken rules I try to follow when giving or receiving feedback.
As a quick refresher, here are some of the spoken rules when giving feedback:
  • Be specific in your feedback, use real and timely examples
  • Emphasize the behavior and the impact of that behavior
  • Brainstorm next steps or alternate behaviors together
Feedback is a gift that shows you are willing to invest in someone's growth, or in yours. it is one of the key skills of proven leaders, yet, a difficult one to get comfortable with.
When I give feedback, I try to remember these unspoken rules:
  1. Feedback must come from a place of love, otherwise, it's not a true gift
  2. Don't get attached, it is ok if the recipient chooses to ignore the feedback
As the recipient of feedback, I try to recall these unspoken rules:
  1. No one is perfect, listen beyond the flaws to get to the nugget of wisdom in the feedback
  2. Take what resonates with who I am and who I'm becoming and leave the rest

Speaking of feedback, here is  a request to you  (post in comments below): What topics would you like to read more of from me?
